Instead of the usual Philippine Independence Day festivities, new advocacy group Ahon Mahirap chose to celebrate this patriotic occasion with a flash feeding program for the masses inside the QC Memorial Circle called “Ka-Pares sa Pag-Ahon” last June 12, 2024.
Ka-Pares sa Pag-Ahon
With the food viand “pares” recently trending in the Philippines care of ‘Diwata‘ social media personality, it is not surprising that the concept clicks with many.
‘Pares‘ meaning “pair” in English, wikipedia describes it as “a serving of Filipino braised beef stew with garlic fried rice“; usually served with a bowl of clear soup. This ‘pairing‘ is a common low-cost meal set sold pinoy roadside eateries.
Needless to say, the activity was a hit at the said public park, on a holiday.
The activity was spearheaded by Ahon Mahirap President Kristine Aplal and Founder Wilbert Tolentino – fellow influencers and famous social media personalities in the Philippines.
About 1,200 bowls of free Pares were given to elders, children, workers, and park-goers. There were also a number of ‘followers’ of Ka-Freshness Wilbert Tolentino who intentionally came to see him in person as he announced the said activity on his social media channels a few days before.
What is Ahon Mahirap?
For the unfamiliar Ahon Mahirap is a new advocacy group aimed in “alleviating poverty through social justice, financial literacy, and economic empowerment“. Founded in 2020, the group aims to “create a society where every Filipino has the opportunity to achieve a dignified and equitable life“.
Moreover, group founder Wilbert Tolentino and president Kristine Aplal both mentioned that this first-ever “Ka-Pares sa Pag-Ahon” is just the start of many similar activities that they hope to replicate in different communities around the country to at least somehow ‘alleviate‘ poverty in some ways.
